Played in the Saturday afternoon field and enjoyed the good vibe at this popular members club both before and after the round. It’s an old fashioned course, and the only other vaguely similar in South Africa is Royal Port Alfred. Umdoni Park has more scenic views over the coastline. It also has some of the steepest uphill holes in the country, notably the par-4 ninth, where the short-iron approach is equivalent to trying to land the ball on the top-storey of a block of flats! On several greens you cannot see the bottom of the flag. But there are fabulous holes too that enrapture those who play here and keep bringing them back. The clubhouse restaurant provides superb fare at a good price, perfect for after the round.
