The Belmont’s greens are a picture at this time of year and running beautifully true. The quirkiness of the greens is a feature of this picturesque country layout, and they vary individually from hole to hole. An absolutely unique green is that at No 14, perhaps the only one of its kind in SA. It’s large and has a steep slope running off a raised section of green on the right. Initially I was sceptical about its playability, yet over time I’ve come to accept this is all part of the character of a most interesting layout (by Tyrone Yates) defined by the shaping and size of its greens. You have to be pinpoint with your approach shots, or excellent with the flat stick. Another green with an even steeper slope to it is at the short pulpit par 3 11th. One green where the slope has been levelled out though is at the par-3 eighth. Balls hitting the front were spinning back off the green towards the river that crosses the hole.
