There’s a lot to like about a visit to Stellenbosch GC, and it explains why so many tourists enjoy the experience at this exceptionally well-run Winelands destination. The clubhouse is one of the best in SA and has lately been enhanced by an attractively designed entrance area. The new exterior architecture is stunning. For me the clubhouse succeeds because of the simplicity and beauty of its layout, the thoughtful aesthetic touches. Everything is easy to find, and each separate facility, whether it be pro shop, halfway house, locker rooms, 19th hole, is faultlessly aligned for the needs of members and visitors. Couple all that with amiably prompt service and you have a 5-star place where golfers want to linger after their round. The course itself is equally well turned out in its attention to detail and manicuring, and I was impressed by the smartly dressed and friendly course staff. On leaving I bumped into one of Stellenbosch’s legends, David Frost, home for the holidays. He was hobbling with a knee injury, using a stick, so was not there to hit golf balls. A good lunch at the 19th, and a view over the 18th where he clinched the 1999 SA Open, must have been more appealing
