Full marks to Steenberg when it comes to providing the best Playability of their course for a wide-ranging variety of golfers. They now have as many as six teeing options, so you can play the course from the tips at 6106 metres, or as far forward as 4799. The four sets of tees between 5100 and 5800 should suit most. Steenberg are fortunate in having a number of different tee boxes on each hole, so it was easy to make this happen without having too many tee markers tight together. Two examples: the short par-4 11th can be played from 229 to 313, and the par-3 17th between 81 and 161. How about the long par-5 fifth where 107 metres separates yellow from green. The broad tees at Nos 2 and 7 are among the biggest mown areas I’ve seen for par 3s. I enjoyed the superb conditioning and general presentation of the layout, runoffs around greens, and little things like an attractive pathway leading through the trees from 12th green to 13th tee. The par-5 12th is an improved hole with the fairway waste bunker no longer a hurdle to carry to reach the fairway. That part of it has been filled in. Shorter hitters can now hit a straight drive into mown grass, not sand. The lengthy bunker itself has been attractively landscaped with wiry grass and plants.
