Silver Lakes suffered possibly its worst flooding this summer with the heavy rainfall in Gauteng. Fairways became broad rivers, and three bridges on the course need replacing. The course has recovered magnificently though and is looking particularly good. There’s a definite bushveld feel to this Matkovich layout, in the many indigenous trees, rocky outcrops, veld grasses, and protected areas of bush, plus the wildlife. Care is taken to only irrigate the playing areas and leave out-of-play areas as natural as possible. Attention to detail at Silver Lakes is excellent, notably the course furniture. With numerous water hazards, much expense has gone into beautifying and protecting the edges of fairways and greens with rocks and gabion retaining walls.
