Rustenburg has all the trappings of a rural bushveld layout, even if this 18-hole course is surrounded by busy city life. Parts of the clubhouse are utilised by small businesses, and there are some obtrusive commercial signboards. Other than around Nos 14 and 15 though, which run close to the main road through town, golf here is a quiet and restful experience. It’s an enjoyable layout to play, with an entertaining mix of memorable, challenging and average holes. It’s generally flat terrain with the occasional mild undulation. The front nine has three par 5s, and I found the back nine more varied in its design, although finishing with one of the weaker 4s. A feature of the holes around the clubhouse are the life-sized animal sculptures which I quite appreciated but other golfers might not.
