What a treat to play Orkney again after a long interval. This Vaal River course remains a superb layout in so many respects. Firstly, the magnificent greens complexes, both the putting surfaces and the bunkering. The long, narrow raised green at 13 is a classic. Golf Data built them 30 years ago, and they have stood the test of time. Interesting shapes, challenging yet playable, and a wealth of pin positions. Secondly, Orkney has terrific aesthetics, a tranquil location with attractive trees framing holes. Thirdly, design variety is beautifully balanced. Some excellent par 4s. And it’s an easy walk. Two of us with caddies were around in three hours. The club had just hosted the North West Closed, and many of the best pin placements had been used, so it was fun. The clubhouse has been refurbished, and membership has grown to over 500.
