Maccauvlei is hosting two prestige 72-hole events in January. The Free State Open concluded yesterday with a 13-under victory for 37-year-old Louis Moolman (Pretoria CC), who birdied the last three holes for a closing 67, and then beat SA’s No 1 amateur Altin van der Merwe (Bellville) in a playoff. Next week the Sunshine Tour arrives for the Mediclinic Invitational, the first time in many many years at Maccauvlei other than Qualifying School events. Course in excellent condition after weeks of soft rain, and hopefully will prove a challenge for the strong field. Last year’s Mediclinic at Centurion was won with 25-under.
