There is a big advantage to starting your round on the first hole at Maccauvlei. This straight-as-a-die par 4 has a generously wide fairway for your opening drive of the day, although the bunkers right do come into play for a fade. The par-4 tenth, by contrast, is a tricky dogleg where tall pine trees can block your approach to the green. Difficult to judge what club is needed off the tee. The pretty front nine offers an interesting variety of holes: two challenging par 5s where placing the tee shot in the right part of the fairway is crucial; a terrific short par 4 up the hill at No 3; and two demanding par 3s. Maccauvlei is extremely well bunkered, and they are a feature of the layout. Some substantial beauties out there guarding fairways and greens. They will catch you sooner or later. The greens are magnificent, running at a quick speed so you have to treat them respectfully.
