The Aesthetics at Humewood have sadly changed for the worse in the last couple of years with the building of multi-storey apartment blocks (accommodation for NMMU students) bordering the par-3 sixth hole. As the buildings multiply they become more of an eyesore for golfers. The backdrop to the beautiful fifth hole is now an ugly grey edifice. The pin flag was difficult to see. Unfortunate there is nothing to screen the buildings. Fortunately the rest of the course is still pristine and scenic, other than banks of solar panels behind the range. These probably could be screened off more easily than the buildings. The Humewood greens (superbly creative in their design, contours and size) were surprisingly soft for a links course, leaving unlikely pitch marks in the surface. Humewood is a Top 10 course yet the quality of the flagsticks doesn’t reflect that. They all appear short and flimsy.
