A beautiful still autumn morning in May always casts a golden light on any course you’re playing, but I have to say Goose Valley looked magnificent on my most recent visit. It ranks up there with any course in the Garden Route in terms of its overall conditioning and presentation. And these high standards are consistently maintained. Interestingly designed holes give Goose Valley plenty of variety from 1 to 18, and a smooth flow to the routing. The back nine stands out for its sequence of excellent holes. One strong hole after another from 10 to 16, and then you’re surprisingly presented with two attractive short par 4s at 17 and 18 which you won’t find at any other Top 100 layout. Another thing which makes Goose Valley unique is that there’s no practice putting green near the clubhouse or first tee. You have to walk to the range to find one.
