Goldfields West presents an outstanding experience for a remote club in the bushveld. And only an hour’s drive from Johannesburg. The clubhouse facilities are attractively presented, and the catering is good. I liked the electronic board outside the pro shop which advertised the club’s offerings. Many golfers will relax afterwards on the outside deck under a thatch roof, but quite a novelty is the windowless 19th hole inside, worth a visit for a cold beer or two, a step back in time to an earlier era. The lights are dimmed, as was once preferred by regular drinking customers, so it initially appears dark inside. This “proper bar” with its original furnishings and bar counter has been perfectly restored by crafts people to how it was in the club’s heyday in the 1970s and 80s when the clubhouse was new and bustling daily with employees from the gold mines.
