East London has hosted a record seventh men’s Premier Interprovincial, and its first since 2006. Central Gauteng surprisingly won the A section title (first time at East London since 1977 when their team included two future SA Open champions, Mark McNulty and Gavan Levenson) from two of the leading coastal teams, Eastern Province and Western Province, who would have been more at home in the breezy conditions. The club has been a regular IPT host since 1970, and this linksy coastal layout is undeniably suited for risk-reward matchplay golf. Coming out of winter the course was dry and the ball running, which is an attractive feature at East London. Greens were excellent. Every par 4 that was drivable was driven (these are Nos 5-6-7-13-16), plus the 366-metre 18th where on a windless day two youngsters hit their drives over the edge of the clubhouse to the back of the green.
