Eagle Canyon is a great golf experience if you’re playing well and want to test your swing under pressure. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea because there are difficult shots to be played, water hazards to be carried, and elevation changes to contend with. If you like those challenges then you will enjoy the surprising diversity of holes before you. Like Ebotse Links, which was also built in a former quarry, it’s a unique offering for Gauteng. There’s no feeling of repetitiveness in the design. Every hole has its own character and separate challenge. If there is a weakness then it lies in the sameness of the greens complexes. They are a bit unimaginative and basically the easy part. When I first played here I didn’t quite know what to make of the layout, but it grows on you. In essence it’s fun to play because it is so different, and good golfers will embrace that.
