Another visit to Cathedral Peak, during a month of beautiful weather in the Berg and with the course still in good condition before winter. Good condition is a relative term for such a remote golf course with limited resources, but the fairways were being mown and the greens running at a fair speed. Scenically this is golfing heaven, yet also an excellently designed layout by the late Reg Taylor. I love the par-4 third over the crest of a hill (bush pigs appear to have attacked parts of the fairway), while No 8/17 is a classic short 4 (290/316) which the best in the country would love to have as their own. From a high tee the perfect tee shot is a fade off the side of a ridge over a stream into the fairway to open up the green hidden on the other side of the stream. Baboons visit the course daily and are shy, although I didn’t attempt a tee shot at the par-3 second because the hole was clearly their playground. The course is a strong par 70 (thick kikuyu fairways allow for little run) and most enjoyable challenge. Attractive clubhouse but seldom used.
