Blair Atholl has a terrific aura about it, both in terms of its rugged African setting in the hills outside Johannesburg and the sense of space. Few golf courses have such a large footprint. Every hole is in its own individual corridor. You feel alone out there. The greens are huge — collectively they add up to more than 10 000 square metres — and brilliantly designed with creative slopes and run-off areas. If you don’t drive the ball at least 250 metres, play the forward tees to get maximum enjoyment.
