Previous national ranking

99 (2021) and 96 (2020)

Koro Creek is one of a group of attractive modern bushveld courses in the Waterberg region of Limpopo, built in the new millennium. It is the closest to the N1 highway, and centrally situated so that the estate has become a convenient base for golfing groups exploring the area. You have a choice of half-a-dozen courses within an hour’s drive.

Koro Creek has a big year scheduled for 2022, firstly hosting the Big Five Pro-Am starting January 30 as part of the PGA of SA centenary celebrations. Other events include the European Challenge Tour’s Limpopo Championship (co-hosting with Euphoria) at the end of March, the Limpopo Open (amateurs) in July, and the men’s Premier Interprovincial in September.

The front side is the shorter nine, but it also has the more difficult greens, some with serious slopes. The back nine is longer but offers more birdie opportunities for the longer hitters.

Koro Creek Bushveld Golf Estate evolved around different estate planning compared to other Waterberg estates. It concentrated on secure upmarket residential housing within the convenience of a town’s infrastructure rather than being a second-home wildlife destination in the remote bushveld. Today it is a prosperous and restful looking estate bordering the leafy suburbs of Modimolle. It has a large shopping mall and is attracting retirees, drawn by a broad selection of retirement villages. It’s close enough to the N1 that it’s just a 90-minute drive south to Pretoria.

Additional Course Facts

Course Record

62 by Rourke van der Spuy in second round of Limpopo Championship (30-32), with eight birdies & an eagle 3 at 18.

There was a 63 by Danie van Tonder in 2020 Limpopo Championship, and three 63s in 2022, by Nic Bachem, Max Rottluff and Oliver Hundeboll.

Feature Holes

Koro Creek has one of the most unique and challenging par 3s. The seventh is a special bushveld creation, and can play anything from 140 metres to a daunting 222 from the back tee, although the Sunshine Tour never played it longer than 192 metres. The tee shot has to carry high trees to seek out a large green that has water hazards on both flanks. Short or long is safer than being wide. The first and 18th are two good risk-and-reward par 5s, particularly the opening hole where the green is within reach for two for many golfers, but beware of the deep pond in front of it.

Accommodation

Eight guest houses on the estate with contact details on the Koro Creek website.

Practice Facility

Driving range open to the public has good quality golf balls. There is also a short-game area.

Koro Creek proved to be a terrific matchplay venue when the course hosted the men's Premier Interprovincial in September. Conditioning was excellent.

Koro Creek has golf's equivalent of a "Haunted House" which stands like a spectre next to the tee of the par-3 12th hole. Here is one of the most attractive holes on the course, played over a picturesque water hazard (one of several on the course) to a green with a bushveld backdrop, and towering ominously over the scene is this vast brick pillar of an unfinished estate home. Even if the building had been completed it would still have looked horrific such is its ridiculous dimensions. What a contrast to the beautiful homes which preside over the green at No 10 and the tees on No 11. Koro Creek has a mix of interesting and indifferent holes, and one of the more disappointing is the par-5 18th, which adjoins wetlands to the left of the fairway and green. The tee boxes are the best part of it. The par-4 ninth is a far better finishing hole.

First time playing Koro Creek, and pleasantly surprised at the good condition of the course at this time of year, compared to other bushveld courses in same area. Greens were good, as was the pro shop interaction. However, it was tricky to find our way around the 18 holes as it was not always obvious where to go next.

One of the more open bushveld courses you will find in Limpopo, missing many of the strategic trees which are a feature of the likes of Zebula and Elements. This makes it very playable off the tee and suits the longer hitters. It is a longish course, although the tee boxes are perfectly spaced out for different skills levels. Koro's strong point is having several interestingly designed and unexpected holes, while water hazards frequently come into play. The par 3s are not to be sneezed at. If you can par them all you are a very good golfer. The fourth and seventh are each over 200 metres from the back markers, and No 7 is unusually tricky, asking golfers to clear high trees to reach the green. A weakness of the design is the lack of any short risk-reward par 4s. Even off the white club tees the shortest is 347 metres.

Koro Creek is in the best condition of the bushveld courses in the Waterberg. They have had rain so fairways are green. The big greens have the odd buck spoor on them, but consistent to putt on and quick.

A thinking player's course with interesting holes to test your game. Greens are very good.

Golf course scores tougher than it looks and is a challenge. Tough climate for keeping the course in condition and the course staff do a good job in a dry area of the country.
