Houses line every hole at Blue Valley – there are 1450 homes on this vast residential estate midway between Johannesburg and Pretoria – but this is a spacious golf course on an undulating property. The estate is built on the slopes of two wide hills gently falling into the Rietspruit river valley. There were no trees on the land when the course was built, so water features and mounding were created for definition.

On the front nine the holes tend to play down or climb up the slopes, quite steeply at times, while the back nine sees the holes mostly running along the slopes until the 18th, a par 5 which climbs uphill back to the clubhouse.

Gary Player and Phil Jacobs came up with some excellent design features to suit the rolling terrain. The first and tenth holes run parallel to each other down a slope – separated by a water feature – to an enormously wide double green fronted by a water hazard and rocks. From the elevated back tees they are reasonably short par 4s, and exciting holes to play.

There is a good selection of par 3s, with the second played across the river to a narrow green guarded by bunkers. It is one of Gary Player’s favourite par 3s. There are several strong par 4s, among them the downhill fourth, uphill sixth, downhill ninth (with an out of bounds fence to the right), the flat 11th (stroke 1) alongside the river on its left, and dogleg right 14th. Three of the par 5s play steeply uphill, and the 516-metre fifth (stroke 2) is a beauty, starting from an elevated tee over the river to an angled fairway.

Blue Valley featured in the Top 100 rankings from 2004 to 2014, with a highest position of No 68 in 2004.

In the winter months Blue Valley is the best test of links golf in Gauteng.

Blue Valley last appeared in the Top 100 rankings 10 years ago, and yet this is still an outstanding Gary Player layout both pleasant and challenging to play. It wouldn't be out of place in the Top 100 today, as its conditioning is better than average. Bunker sand is exceptionally good. Greens run at an ideal pace. I enjoy hilly courses, but the undulating terrain may not be everyone's cup of tea. There are steep inclines on the front nine, notably at par-5s No 3 and 5. Golf cart essential. Blue Valley is a vast residential estate, yet there are attractive pockets of bushveld vegetation around the course which makes it scenic in many places. Left of holes 5-7 particularly. The course mostly feels wide off the tee, although the lengthy No 11 (stroke 1) has the Rietspruit river left of the fairway. One of the few flat holes. A well-balanced layout where the 5s were sensibly built on the steepest climbs. There's no uphill slog on a par 4. Six of them are downhill.

Blue Valley is a nice course but having played here a few times I do fear it is going backwards from what I am used to. The good parts: Greens were great, true and fast. Fairways also good but many divots in lay-up areas at Nos 7, 16 & 17 between 100-120 metres from greens. Parts to improve: The overall look and feel is outdated. We had to wait for a cart which didn't have GPS and felt old. Locker rooms require a revamp. Paint and tiles. Good halfway food but it took too long to pay. Not efficient. The flag colours were white and different to that on the scorecard. A basic mistake. Entering the estate we were greeted with smiles at security, but the process was tediously long. They must make a plan. Blue Valley is a course I will continue to play and recommend but is in need of an upgrade especially the clubhouse.

Played here on September 1 in a pro-am. It was a cold and rainy first day of spring and I was pleasantly surprised by the conditioning at this time of year.

Great Gary Player layout; only downside is out of bounds on every hole.
