Previous ranking

85 (2022) & 93 (2021)

Goose Valley is an enjoyable and popular privately owned course on an attractive site overlooking the Keurbooms River, easy to access being on the N2. It began as a 9-holer, and increased to 18 in 2002 with the development of the Turtle Creek residential estate on the property. The seven holes on that side have a distinctly different look to them than the older section. It’s reasonably busy with about 32 000 rounds a year.

The course has an interesting mix of holes, with attractive and challenging modern greens complexes. There are as many as six short par 4s (301 to 335 metres), yet none of them would be considered an obviously easy birdie hole. While there are only a few water hazards, the course is well bunkered and fynbos borders some fairways.

A smallish clubhouse with an outside verandah sits side-on to the fairway of the 323-metre 18th.

Feature Holes

The par-3 11th, played from an elevated tee facing the Keurbooms River and Indian Ocean, would be considered the signature hole. The par-5 seventh is a fearsome test at 515 metres from the back tee, with water guarding the left of the driving area. From there it’s gradually uphill to an elevated green. The first hole is also particularly good, curving to the right around a water hazard.

Practice Facility

Good-sized range close to clubhouse, open to public.

Goose Valley was in good condition and this course is always a pleasure to play. It's not long but presents a good challenge for the average golfer. The setting and surrounding flowering fynbos is a pleasure to experience.

Goose Valley seems able to absorb massive volumes of rounds and still maintain an excellent quality of conditioning, testament to their excellent greenkeeping staff. Greens, fairways and hazards are well defined, in consistent condition and a visual feast. When the wind picks up, which it generally does, the course is a stronger test than the rating dictates. More than a few members have commented that Goose Valley is hurting their handicap index because of the challenge.

A beautiful still autumn morning in May always casts a golden light on any course you're playing, but I have to say Goose Valley looked magnificent on my most recent visit. It ranks up there with any course in the Garden Route in terms of its overall conditioning and presentation. And these high standards are consistently maintained. Interestingly designed holes give Goose Valley plenty of variety from 1 to 18, and a smooth flow to the routing. The back nine stands out for its sequence of excellent holes. One strong hole after another from 10 to 16, and then you're surprisingly presented with two attractive short par 4s at 17 and 18 which you won't find at any other Top 100 layout. Another thing which makes Goose Valley unique is that there's no practice putting green near the clubhouse or first tee. You have to walk to the range to find one.

Goose Valley has risen to a proper Garden Route layout frequented by many on golf tours and holidays. Very playable, always in great condition and has some serious teeth in the wind. Tee options make it more of a challenge for the low handicap looking to play longer shots into greens, particularly on shorter holes.

This pleasant layout is short yet requires clever shot-making to stay out of the various smart bunkering.

Goose Valley always conjures up an image of great conditioning and presentation. It has some of the best and most aesthetic holes found anywhere. These are the older holes from the original 9-holer and unfortunately the newer ones tend to lack length and memorability. And the housing estate tends to encroach too close on them. Despite this it's always a delight to play at Goose Valley which has a typical homely feel to the overall experience.

Goose Valley provides golfers with a most enjoyable layout, set in typically attractive Garden Route surroundings. The design is easy to like, particularly the memorable back nine which contains an excellent mix of outstanding holes, not a weak one among them. The greens are a feature at Goose Valley, beautifully shaped, bunkered and presented. There are some terrific pin positions. And they putt superbly. The front nine begins promisingly with three splendid holes, but holes 4 to 6 among the houses are weak by comparison. And the dogleg par-5 seventh could be so much better if the water hazard could be more easily carried off the yellow and white tees. The risk is too great for anyone other than long hitters. And what's with the mound hiding the elevated green?

I live in Bloemfontein, and fortunate to play at Goose Valley. The course is in excellent condition, with the best greens. Well marshalled, a top experience from arrival to leaving.

Delightful and well presented course. Conditioning of bunkers and greens was excellent. Tees a little uneven and patchy in places. Fairways decent.

Having last played Goose Valley in January, it was great to see the conditioning just as good four months later. The course has really shone since the end of the dry spell a few years ago. This has allowed the Goose Valley staff to mould it into something every golfer can enjoy as a visual experience. Our group was of the firm belief that the greens were the best in the Garden Route. The stretch of holes on the back nine that run close to the lagoon and through the pine trees produce both a great set of signature holes and a stern test when the wind blows. Goose Valley is ranked far too low considering its quality.

Whatever the weather, you can rely on the quality of Goose Valley’s fairways and greens. Despite the number of houses & apartments that flank several holes, the course is visually attractive and an enjoyable test for players of all standards. The pro shop staff are friendly, welcoming and eager to please. It should be on the itinerary for anyone planning a Garden Route tour.

I played Goose Valley recently during its busy season and was impressed with how well the course conditioning was holding up with extra traffic. The fairways and greens are in good shape and reward good shots. When the wind picks up at Goose Valley length goes out the window, with accuracy more important. I love the views many of the holes provide and the proximity to the sea and lagoon adds another dimension. Short par 4s at 17 and 18 make for a cracking finish when there is money on the game and the par 5s are a defining feature as they can be birdie or double bogey.

One of my all-time Garden Route favourites. I grew up playing here and never get tired of it. Greenkeeper Wesley Pain is doing phenomenal improvements; greens are always lightning fast and roll true. I am particularly fond of the first hole, 11th and 14th. I recommend it to anyone looking for a challenge and at the same time to enjoy the views.

The Garden Route has a multitude of great courses and Goose Valley never fails to deliver. One of the best conditioned courses, an absolute delight. Some tricky holes mixed in with shorter risk and reward holes. Plenty of tee options make it an enjoyable challenge for any golfer. The experience from clubhouse to course and back leaves you with a smile on your face.

Most golfers can't help but enjoy playing at Goose Valley. It's usually in excellent condition, built in a scenic setting, and very user friendly. It has a few extremely difficult holes, where you need to play cautiously, but the club golfer also finds plenty of birdie opportunities at half-a-dozen short par 4s. I particularly liked their colourful scorecard, one of the best I've seen. Simple, yet effective. The Goose Valley clubhouse is cleverly positioned adjacent to the 18th hole, with an outside deck where you can watch proceedings.

A tight course with great greens. In good condition all year and drains particularly well, making it the course of choice when wet.
