Steenberg have plans to extend the water hazard on the right side of the par-5 fifth hole, not far from the tee, extending it further down to the fairway bunker. This will also provide an increased water supply. Another project is to add an extra green on this hole on the other side of the hazard which could be played as a par 3 in the event of having to temporarily close a hole for extraordinary maintenance. Having a “19th hole” has been common practice in Australia for many years. If the staff need to work on any hole, the “19th” is put into play for the amount of time it takes to do the work. Last year the poa turf on two of Steenberg’s 3s, the third and 14th, was removed and replaced with kikuyu, and that is a big improvement in turf condition. Looks so much better in summer. Fringes of greens are neat and smooth, likewise the greens look healthy and quick for putting at 12-13 on stimp. Bunkers consistent. No need for placing on fairways. .
