One of the feature holes at the Bay is the 301m 12th, a unique and intimidating short 4, particularly into an easterly wind when the fairway looks narrower than usual. Its green lies close to the ocean, with only a dune between it and the waves. It’s a hole constantly under threat from coastal erosion — the stability of the coastline here has evidently been compromised by developments around Port St Francis — and to lose the green complex would be devastating for the golf club. There’s a public car park near the 13th tee which is being steadily eaten away by the force of the waves. The golf club has already gone to considerable expense reinforcing the ocean side of the dune with rocks, and further work is to be done by building a wooden wall to ensure both the dune’s and the green’s survival.
