The South Coast courses are wet after so much rain in January and February. Southbroom though has six holes built on a sand base which are dry and playable. No mud balls on these., which are the opening par 4, and the final five holes, 14 to 18. The rest of the course is built on clay, and you can see how wet they are in contrast, notably 6-7-13. Conditioning vastly improved over the past year with an outsourced maintenance contract, and the greens have been the biggest beneficiary. For a holiday layout, Southbroom possesses one of the best sets of par 3s in SA, each a gem. The tee at 4 is on the edge of the beach to a long, narrow green, Nos 8 and 11 are played from high tees to greens guarded by water, while 14 is an outstanding long 3 (183) which has a glorious links look to it. Into the wind a fierce challenge. Nos 17-18 are two delightful examples of old-fashioned medium par 5s, unique for SA in being paired together at the end. You can reach them in two, but can you hold the greens?
