Mark McNulty is one of San Lameer’s biggest fans. The former SA legend lives on the estate and is highly complementary about how the course has improved during his time here. It was looking superb when we chatted. Awesome greens. He was out playing in the Wednesday field competition on the day I visited. The club has a shotgun start at 11am each week, and this format is becoming increasingly popular at “cart courses” so that everyone finishes together and can socialise afterwards with an early prizegiving. Much attention is paid to the small details at San Lameer. Few may notice that the mounding in the first fairway, the demanding uphill par 5, has been shifted left to stop drives deflecting left off these mounds into the trees and rough off the fairway. Horrible result to start a round. The mounds now form a barrier which vastly improves playability. I’m always impressed by the magnificent view of San Lameer and the coastline from the highly elevated second tee. What a vista. This is an incredibly scenic hole, and there are others to come at No 6-9-15, three other favourite holes of mine.
