There is a festive buzz at Royal Port Alfred in December. Added activity and excitement has been provided by the newly opened Padel courts next to the entrance. During the holidays the course is full, but the management of tee times, using the unique routing of the course, means opportunities to play, while the pace of play is generally good. An early riser will often catch the best weather (first tee time 5.30). The work done on the greens in introducing new types of grass is evident. In all my years of playing RPA, the greens were the best I have experienced. I am sure they will continue to improve. Good seasonal rain has meant the club has implemented a no placing rule which speaks to the quality of the grass cover on the fairways. Although I am not convinced they completely warrant that level of confidence as some harder and uneven patches on a few fairways justifies placing. Royal is a fun experience with stunning ocean views, and the club seems to be going from strength to strength.
