Modderfontein is a rare design in having just one straight par 4 or 5 (that’s No 7). Doglegs abound at this attractive parkland layout and make for several brilliant holes. I particularly like the challenge of the opening par 5. Short at 469 off the back, but the tee shot must be positioned correctly to have a clear shot at right angles over the river to the green. The par-4 sixth is an ingenious dogleg which troubles most golfers. It plays between 335 and 405, yet the landing area shrinks to a narrow space where the dogleg turns sharp right. It pays to be cautious and leave a longer approach to a raised green. The only dogleg where it can pay to cut the corner is the uphill fourth (334 to 414). But trees guard the right side of the fairway and there’s a perfectly placed bunker on the left side. Some doglegs are soft, and No 15 (343 to 453) is a special 4 where water flanks the right side of the fairway. But avoiding it too far left brings one of Modderfontein’s “giants” into play. Trying to carry that immense tree is high risk, so you must shape a shot around its wide limbs.
