Mbombela, in the heart of Mpumalanga’s capital, is one of SA’s most enjoyable inland layouts. The defining feature is beautiful aesthetics — a lush, tree-lined landscape set against stunning backdrops. The fairways are framed by a rich mix of mature trees which not only add to the natural beauty but shape the course’s strategic challenge. Design variety is excellent, a balanced mix of testing holes. The routing takes advantage of natural elevation changes, with several tee boxes and greens offering sweeping views of the Lowveld. Club selection and trajectory become crucial with players often required to punch out should a large tree impede the path of play! Definition and presentation are of a good standard. Conditioning is steadily improving again having fallen off the past year. Bunkers cleverly placed and visually appealing, complementing the course’s natural contours. Consistency of sand remains a focus to improve the overall experience. Standout holes are the par 3s (3- 5-13-17), visually striking and superbly designed. Each offers a different challenge, from elevated tees to forced carries. No 5 Natal Mahogany (135 from club tee) is a favourite, while 17 is short at 110 and proclaimed as an “opportunity for an ace” (none happened when we played). Mbombela captures the essence of Lowveld golf.
