Katberg is attracting a growing number of tour groups, and the remote Eastern Cape estate high in the mountains does a good job of looking after them. There are 14 golf villas to rent between 15th and 16th holes, and if you’re staying in one you pay a member guest green fee of R350, a R200 saving on visitor fee. Manager Piet Gunther assists with organising transport from East London Airport, and lays on the hospitality, preparing a braai at the clubhouse if required. It’s generally quiet in midweek, and groups have the course to themselves. It’s also a popular venue for junior interprovincials. Course is extremely lush, and the fairways have become tighter with long grass defining their borders. You cannot grip it and rip it to take advantage of the shorter holes without putting yourself at risk. Katberg’s greens are among the best in the region, and run at a beautiful pace, quicker than most golfers expect. Two greens, 9 and 18, are recovering from emergency treatment after contracting a fungal disease. Course is on hilly terrain, with elevation changes, so walking not recommended. Carts make it more enjoyable.
