The addition of seven new holes at Gowrie has been eagerly anticipated by its fans. The design of these holes is a significant deviation from the original layout, where the greens complexes were receptive and relatively subtle. The new greens provide beautiful putting surfaces, but may be over-designed considering the pot bunkers, run-off areas and general slopes typical of Gowrie. A good example is the par-5 seventh with a multi-tiered green very difficult to hold. The playability rating will be impacted, with the test likely too extreme for the everyday club golfer. The camber of several of these holes is counterintuitive, making for less enjoyable golf compared to the original section. However, the new holes will improve over a few growing seasons. The new par-3 sixth (Gong Rock) is a good addition, played across a dip in the terrain to a well-bunkered green. The ninth is a “risk-reward” short 4 which the longer hitter will attempt to drive. But the green is difficult to hold with bunkers oddly placed below the putting surface. The return on the back nine to the old holes is welcome and will rekindle the enjoyment factor. Gowrie has a beautiful setting for its 19th with excellent service.
