Pleasant surprise to see how beautifully presented and maintained this Central Gauteng gem is right now. Playing here is a wonderful escape from city environments, and I’d describe it as one of the best nature walks in golf it’s that pretty and undisturbed. Being quiet in midweek it’s a great venue for two-balls or if you want to play a quick 36 holes in a day with lunch in between rounds. It’s closer to Johannesburg and Sandton than similar bushveld courses in the Waterberg. Plus, better value and a friendly welcome from a full complement of staff. This is bushveld countryside, and I like the way the veld grass has been allowed to grow tall in summer and create excellent definition on many holes without affecting playability. Goldfields appears to have lots of space off the tee, yet there’s a correct side of every fairway from where you need to play your approach shots. Course has a superb flow and balance to it, a tribute to designer Bob Grimsdell’s design work. Greens are old-fashioned, and still have cynodon grass, so coming here feels like playing in another era.
