We’re fortunate to have a Greg Norman course in SA, and Eye of Africa is a good example of his design talent. With cynodon fairways there is a distinct difference between playing in winter or summer conditions. Currently it’s firm underfoot, so good bounce and run out on longer shots. On 8 and 11, downhill par 5s, drives went nearly 300 metres. Some golfers might thus want to move back another set of tees. The fairways resemble those on a UK links. Greens are quickest and truest I’ve played in a long time. Even uphill putts had speed in them. Being so spacious, putting is a key challenge. The par 5s are feature holes and interestingly spaced out (2-8-11-17). From yellow tees they vary in distance from 540 to 594, a substantial average of 561 considering these are not the championship tees. That would make EOA the longest from that distance range of tees, ahead of a 550 average at Els Club Copperleaf.
