Played day after 54-hole Big Easy tournament and greens were superb. Judging from the scores it was a demanding test for the second-tier professionals. Club champion Jason Burnand was in contention for the title in last round before a 9 at No 9 blew his chances. Designer Peter Matkovich, as part of his links theme at Ebotse, built interesting hillocks on various holes as features or hazards, and the grass on them has grown so thick after all the rain that any ball landing in them is unplayable if you are fortunate to find it. A few hillocks surround the seventh green, and two stand sentinel on the fairway about 75 metres short of the 18th green. If you can’t carry them with a long approach you need to thread the ball through a narrow gap. The biggest hillock is in the middle of the fourth fairway, although it’s a long way from the tee. Ebotse Links is one of the best golfing experiences in Gauteng, and that includes the 19th Hole which gives you a grandstand seat from the upstairs deck looking back at the 18th.
