Eagle Canyon is a test in winter. The course has a “links feel” and run out is difficult to control. Greens in excellent shape and running over 11. True roll will test your lag putting. There are several demanding tee shots where hazards are in play. Par 3s a varied mix. No 4 excellent with its carry over water and bunker long, while 11 and 17 are similarly good holes, with strong bunkering and sloped greens. The “risk-reward” theme is common at Eagle Canyon. Many 4s are shorter, but trouble lurks with hazards and out of bounds. Slopes and swales provide that “linksiness” when the ball is running. You need to be on the right side of fairways for approaches into greens. The rolling par-5 18th is both demanding and fun where both eagle and double-bogey are in play. Eagle Canyon is a good alternative to the parkland Gauteng tracks. Well worth a weekday visit.
