I had the pleasure of playing De Zalze with good friend, golfing legend Mark McNulty, and watching a perfectly balanced swing and sensational putting stroke. De Zalze’s greens are 25 years old but running exceptionally well at a stimp of 10.8 on the day, firm and yet receptive. The bunker revamp completed in 2022 was a sound decision, with other new project initiatives on the cards. Work completed on the green collars at 9 and 17 has improved the playability of these greens during rainy periods. Indents in the collars were collecting water and pooling low-lying areas of the greens. A current project to prune trees along the oak-lined Blaauwklippen River gives the course more of a Winelands feel. A round at De Zalze would not be complete without a glass of chenin on the patio of the revamped clubhouse. The view makes this one of the best 19th hole experiences.
