The Woodmead greens carry a beautiful pace to them, and putt superbly, once you get the measure of their speed and contours. In winter conditions you don’t want to get on the wrong side of a slope. There’s a varied balance to the par 4s. From white tees, six play between 330 and 370 metres, which makes them relatively short on firm winter fairways yet tricky with fairway bunkers to avoid and not particularly receptive greens. The other four range from 392 (7) to 428 (11) and are splendidly challenging. The shortest 4, No 12, has a testing two-tiered green bordering a water hazard where the club golfer can easily find themselves wet or in 3-putt territory. Excellent hole which demands maximum respect even with a wedge in hand.
