CCJ’s practice short-game area has two bunkers alongside the green, one labelled Woodmead, the other Rocklands. Golfers are being alerted to the fact that the two courses unusually have different sand in their bunkers. Rocklands, where the bunkers were redone by Bunker Armour, has a firmer quality to the sand — it appears damp — which better golfers prefer as they generate the higher swing speeds essential for a good trap shot. It wasn’t what the club wanted, or Bunker Armour’s decision, as they had no say in the sand used, but rather a supplier error. I liked the sand’s stickiness, but it does require some practice beforehand. The occasional shot can fly out with force. CCJ has endured nearly six months without rain and the rough areas are dry and sandy. Trees must be suffering. Gauteng is in need of soaking rains to transform the landscape.
